Malacca, Friday : The historic city of Malacca is gearing up to usher in the Lunar New Year of the Horse. Though the Lunar New Year is about 3 weeks away, colourful lights and red lanterns are being hung around the Melaka Old Chinatown (around the Jonker Street area) & Melaka New Chinatown (along Jalan Bunga Raya) as preparation to celebrate the coming Lunar New Year of the Horse.
In typical old Malaccan tradition, the daily pasar malam at Jalan Kee Ann in the Melaka New Chinatown sector have seen an increased in visitors and patrons. Additional stores have been set up by vendors to sell New Year goodies, cakes, decoration, flowers & other accessories. This has always happen every year and the night market here will get busier at least two weeks before the New Year.
Hive of activities will peak about two days before the New Year and on New Year’s Eve, most families will hold their tradition Reunion Dinner at home with their families or in restaurants at five star hotels. After the traditional Reunion Dinner, temple devotees, young & old, will throng to the Cheng Koon Teng Temple and other temples around town so as to offer their annual prayers and usher in the New Year.
