One Way Streets Plans
With the recent implementation of the One Way Streets in Jalan Munshi
Abdullah and Jalan Hang Tuah, business has picked up at Jalan Munshi Abdullah.
Car parking is now allowed on both sides of Jalan Munshi Abdullah. Also,
a new set of traffic lights has been installed at the junction of Jalan
Munshi Abdullah and Jalan Bunga Raya. Traffic can now go towards Renaissance
Hotel & Kampung Morten area. With this shorter route & traffic
lights, traffic has picked up at Jalan Bunga Raya recently with minor traffic
jams being reported.
Generally, the overall traffic has improved especially in Jalan Hang
Tuah.
One Way Streets Plans being implemented on 1st. July 2001
Two main roads in Malacca were turned into one way streets from 1st. July 2001. Jalan Munshi Abdullah and Jalan Hang Tuah were converted into one-way on that day. As expected, there were chaos on the streets especially near the Bus Station area as people were confused with the new system.
Sungei Melaka Bridge has been opened on 18th.June 2001
The Sungei Melaka Bridge was opened to the public from 18th. June 2001 after a delay from the target date of 1st. June 2001. The bridge links Tranquerah area to Melaka Raya area at Bandar Hilir and crosses the Melaka River mouth. Spanning over 1 km in length, pedestrians can walk on the bridge and view the old and new sectors of historical Malacca City. During the evenings and at night, pedestrians and cars were seen parked along the bridge to view the night scene of Malacca.
Cheng Koon Teng Temple Reopens
After 2 years of renovation by skilled artisans from China & Malaysia, Malaysia's oldest Chinese Temple was opened to well wishers & visitors from February 2001. The main prayer hall has been completely renovated and carvings have been restored to their splendour. Being built in 1647, Cheng Koon Teng Temple is the oldest in Malaysia and this site must be viewed by visitors to Malacca.
Jonker's Walk Opens in February 2001
Malacca famous antique street, Jonker Street, has been turned into a pedestrian walk for local & foreign tourists from Friday to Sunday nights only. During this period, no cars are allowed into the area and visitors can stroll along the street freely to view the old houses, saviour the local food fare and buy antiques if you want.
Malacca Chinatown Promotional Map is being distributed free
As a Community Service Project, EMP Malaysia has sponsored
the design, printing & distribution of 5000 sets of colour Malacca
Chinatown Promotional Map in November 2000. This specially designed promotional
map highlights the Places of Interest, Places to Stay, Places to Eat &
Drink and Places to Shop within the Old and New Sectors of Malacca Chinatown.
Being the oldest Chinatown in Malaysia, it is at least 400 years old and
has a number of interesting historical sites and streets for visitors.
The map can be obtained from major hotels and outlets within Malacca
City.

Bunga Raya Square Opens at Junction of Jalan Bunga Raya and Jalan Kee Ann!!!
A new open air eating and drinking spot for locals and tourists to Malacca was officially opened at the New Chinatown of Malacca by the Chief Minister of Malacca, YAB Mohd. Ali Rustam in March 2000.
Located at the Junction of Jalan Bunga Raya and Jalan Kee Ann, Bunga
Raya Square was established by the private sector to promote tourism to
the State of Malacca. The Square offers local hawker delicacies and a place
for visitors to relax and unwind after a hard day's work.

Jalan Kee Ann Night Market (Pasar Malam)
for Tourists and Locals
A night market (Pasar Malam) for the public and tourists is
always open from 6.00pm to 11.00pm (Mondays to Sundays) at Jalan Kee Ann.
Hawker stalls are set up here to sell items such as plastic flowers, VCDs,
food items, fruits, watches and other consumer items. At this market, purchasers
are allowed to bargain with vendors.
During the last two weeks before the annual Chinese Lunar Year, this
Pasar Malam is very popular with the locals. Visitors can
buy pre-Chinese New Year goodies, garments, T-shirts, fresh flowers, nien
kou, cakes and numerous items from the stalls.
Open Air Eating Stalls
Located near Jalan Kee Ann and Jalan Pasar Baru, an open air eating
area has been operating here for some time. Open nightly from 6.00
pm onwards just after the tropical heat subsides, eating stalls selling
various types of food are available to food lovers. There is the famous
Malacca won ton mee which used to operate at the Jalan Kee Ann Drive-in,
duck mee, fried radish cake, rojak, satay, roti canai and many more. You
can enjoy your meals and drinks at the tables set up at the road side and
watch the world go by.
