Malacca CIQ and airport expansion hit by rising costs

MALACCA: Two high-impact Federal Government projects here worth RM173mil have hit a snag owing to the recent increase in construction costs.

Contractors of the RM42mil Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex to be built across the Malacca River have warned the state that the project may be delayed or halted due to the unexpected cost hikes.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam confirmed that the project was halted recently.

Washington/Quebec City (dpa) - The United Nations cultural agency Unesco has added 11 new heritage sites covering a swath of civilisation from 10,000-year-old agriculture in Papua New Guinea to 20th-century social housing in Berlin.

Unesco added eight new listings Monday including sites in the Straits of Malacca, Papua New Guinea and San Marino. Three others in Mauritius, Saudi Arabia and China were added on Sunday, and Germany maintained world heritages for Dresden's Elbe Valley landscape despite controversial construction plans.

The Annual Dragon Boat Race has given everyone regardless of their religious beliefs, social background, colour, creed or cultural background to participate. The Chinese community started the event but the other communities have taken a liking to participate too. This is indeed healthy and a significant effort to encourage the growth and development of the sports tourism industry in the state of Melaka.

BANDA HILIR - Melaka will soon have another potential tourist attraction when a waterwheel currently under construction along Jalan Quayside here is completed by the end of this month.

Works on the RM1.44 million waterwheel started last September and works are said to be in the final stages now and it is scheduled for completion soon.

The device is said to have been used during the heydays of the Melaka Malay Sultanate era where a similar device based on the Islamic civilization technology was built along the Melaka River.
