MELAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO BE READY BY SEPTEMBER 2009

Being a state where tourism is a major revenue generator, Malacca is eyeing a share of the RM200 million allocated for the sector in the mini-Budget.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the allocation would be helpful for the various projects being undertaken in the upgrading of tourist attractions in the state. "The allocation is expected to boost the upgrading works on the Batu Berendam Airport to accommodate the landing of Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft, beautification of Sungai Melaka and other tourism-related projects. "Malacca is already cashing in on tourism but we want to turn the state into the ultimate tourist destination and for that we have to have world class infrastructure.

"Although the economy is quite slow, the number of domestic tourists coming to the state has seen an increase this year. The allocation for tour-ism could help us boost our tourism market."

MELAKA AND GEORGETOWN LISTED IN UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE CITIES

Malaysia's Melaka and George Town added to UNESCO sites 08.07.08 01:19

Two historic cities on the Straits of Malacca - Melaka and George Town - have been added to UNESCO's World Heritage list on Monday by the committee meeting in Canada, dpa reported.

The two towns developed over 500 years of trading and cultural exchanges between East and West in the Straits of Malacca, bringing "tangible and intangible" evidence of a multicultural heritage that combines the influences of Asia and Europe, UNESCO said on its website.

Melaka's heritage dates back to the 15th-century Malay sultanate in Melaka and the Portuguese and Dutch periods beginning in the early 16th century.

George Town's residential and commercial buildings represent the British era from the end of the 18th century.

"The two towns constitute a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia," the UNESCO selection committee said.

MALACCA EYE ON THE BANKS OF MELAKA RIVER By Tourism Melaka Reporter

    17th. October 2007

Construction of the smaller version of the Eye of Malaysia is under way on the banks of the Malacca River.

Called the Malacca Eye, the 25 metres-high ferris wheel from Hong Kong is expected to be a far better attraction than the Eye on Malaysia at Titiwangsa as it will have two added attractions built next to it – a trampoline bungy and a pirate ship.

The new attractions are located opposite the former Cathay Cinema which used to be the location of the Express Bus Terminal at Jalan Kilang near Hang Tuah Mall.

The Melaka State government will manage the operations of the ferris whee and had invested some RM 3.3 million for the three attractions which would be fully operational by end of the month i.e. in October 2007.

Malacca Eye will be a permanent feature in the state and its 16 gondolas can sit five people each.

It is hoped that the new attractions will draw more visitors to Melaka. Visitors in the future can enjoy their boat rides up the Melaka River, sit on the Malacca Eye and bounced on the trampoline and ride on the Pirate ship. These are fun projects which can be enjoyed by all.

More importantly, it is good to see that the Melaka State Government are finally investing in tourism projects outside the main heritage zone of Melaka. By doing so, visitors can start to explore the various locations outside the Melaka Heritage Zone.

Currently, too many projects have been carried out around Banda Hilir and are now causing infamous traffic jams around the area on weekends. Tourism Melaka 2007
