Melaka Planning To Set Up Batik Village
MELAKA, June 11 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government is planning on establishing a batik village in the state as part of its efforts to further develop the country's batik industry.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the village will be equipped with various facilities including batik printing workshop, research and development centre and sales centre.
"I have asked Noor Arfa Batek Sdn Bhd to prepare a working paper for the establishment of such a batik village," he told reporters after launching the Melaka Batik House owned by Noor Arfa Batek at the Melaka International Trading Centre in Ayer Keroh here Thursday.
Mohd Ali said the state government was prepared to allocate an 8-hectare area for the development of the batik village.
He hoped that the village would become Malaysia's popular centre for the production of batik.
The chief minister also suggested that the Melaka Institute of Biotechnology carried out research to produce colourings from natural sources like flowers for the production of batik.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of Noor Arfa Batek, Wan Mohd Ariffin Wan Long said the Melaka Batik House was a sales and showroom centre for batik products of batik entrepreneurs from all over the country.
"Anyone who visits Melaka Batik House will be able to see and assess for themselves the quality of batik produced by local entrepreneurs, and all the famous brands of batik from Malaysian producers can be also found here," he said.
He said the company was aiming at an annual sales of RM12 million from Melaka Batik House and expected the centre to become a popular tourist spot as well.
A Bumiputera owned company, Noor Arfa Batek is the leading producer of batik in the country. It began its operations in Kuala Terengganu almost 30 years ago and currently has 14 sales centres nationwide.
